Soul Surfer
Last week, we saw a film called Soul Surfer. This is a new American film. This is a true-life story of surfer Bethany Hamilton.
Bethany (played by Anna Sophia Robb) ,who was born into a surfing family. She lives in Hawaii with her father Tom (played by Dennis Quaid), her mother Cheri (played by Helen Hunt) and two brothers. She has won several surfing competitions.
One morning, she was with friends surfing. Suddenly, a shark attacked her and bit off her left arm.
Bethany’s faith and willpower impressed all those around her. But also she had her family’s love and support. In hospital, Bethany's father read "the Bible" to encouraged her and when Bethany came home from hospital, her family often helped her. When Bethany was perplexed, her mother told her: Venus de Milo was the pinnacle of beauty, and she has one less arm than you.
Then Bethany decided to get back in the water. But the first competition she lost badly. She was very disheartened and she decides to give up surfing.
Then she went to Thailand with her church group to help with the tsunami relief. She found a small girl who had lost her parents in the tsunami and was afraid of the sea. Bethany encouraged her by helping her learn to surf, she was once again able to smile. At that moment, Bethany realized that surfing was not the most important thing in her life, love is much more important than surfing!
Once home, Bethany decided to begin surfing in earnest. Her father made a special board for her.
Near the end of a major competition, the waves had died down and all the surfers could only loiter. Her talent made her realizes that a big set of waves was approaching. The big waves came, she surfed very well, but she stood up after the horn. However, her opponent would like to share the win with Bethany.
At the end of the movie, Bethany said: I wouldn’t change what happened to me. Because then I wouldn’t have this change in front of all of you. This change to embrace more people than I ever could have with two arms.
I love this movie. This movie makes me realize that family, faith and love are very important. When you come back from a loss, beat the odds, and never say never, you can be a champion.
