it cant be a reference to this film because i havnt had a chance to watch it and give my judgement.
but there is something that i desperately want to say about this film , this story, Klaus Mann, a talented writer who virtually wrote it.
cant find much infor of this film in chinese. but based on the book i just read, called ［in the shadow of the magic mountain---the erika and klaus mann story］ by andrea weiss, i believe ［Mephisto］ is not a real life story of Gustaf Grundgen, but a adapted novel written by Klaus Mann althrough the main charater in the book may reveal part of real trait of Gustaf from Klaus' s view.
Gustaf and Klaus met each other at age 26 and 19. they then performed together with also Erika Mann and Pamela.W(cant remember exactlly］ after all Gustaf had became Klaus 's lover and Erika 's finacee. The relationship lasting long enough until gustaf believed that he was neglected when the society only paid attention on to the surname［Mann］.
after argument and divergence going on, the foursome were enstraged from each other. especially Gustaf.
even Klaus tried to catch up with Gustaf after ww2,who already became a celebrity at that time refused to draw back the friendship again. Klaus seemed insisit that was due to his own fail on carrer.
cant judge the personality of Gustaf. respect him as a success. but still have much sympathy toward Klaus.
Klaus did not have the chance to see his novel［Mephisto］ being adapted for film even his name did appear on the screenwrither's list. he commit suicide and eventually successed at the age of 42. drug addiction, lost inspiration , being exclusive of, fail on carrer ( mainly,fail on publishing Mephisto in German］he finally died depressingly.
read through the book even know he had been always associated with the death and natually doesnt have a happy soul still wish intellent, sensitive, isolated,restless and disconnected Klaus could have desire a better ending.
